How do I find downloads?

They appear as links on the right-hand sidebar.

How do I download and read a .PDF file?

All you need on your computer is Adobe Reader. It’s free. Download it here and install it. MAKE SURE you’re downloading the correct version (Mac vs. PC).

How do I submit an assignment via e-mail?

Print it as a PDF file, then attach it to the e-mail.

I will not accept ANY file that is not a .PDF file—that includes Word, PowerPoint, Keynote, Pages, Word Perfect, you name it. Two of the skills I want you to learn in this class are the simple skills of printing to .PDF and attaching a file to an e-mail.

Use this page to help you if you don’t know how to print to .PDF: Click here.

Can I bring a flash / USB drive to submit assignments?

No. Flash drives represent unsafe sex for computers. Viruses are transmitted this way. My computer can scan e-mail attachments for viruses but cannot do the same when copying files from a flash drive.

To cite an English-language common document like Shakespeare or the Declaration of Independence or the U.S. Constitution, do not include them in the Works Cited page and do not use parentheticals; instead, name them in your text. “In Article I, section 5 of the U.S. Constitution…” “In the act five, scene three of Romeo and Juliet…”

How do I use a laptop computer instead of a paper journal (Freshman English I)?

See Mr. Stanford after school on a Tuesday or by appointment to create an online journal.

How do I prepare for my Style Analysis project? (AP Juniors)

NOTE: This was the procedure in 2009. I have not yet decided on a schedule or a procedure for 2010.

On the following dates you must be ready to perform: Monday 11/2, Tuesday 11/3, Wednesday 11/4, Thursday 11/5, Monday 11/9, Tuesday 11/10, Monday 11/16.

Each day 5 students will be selected randomly to come forward and analyze one of the assigned texts in front of the class.

To earn an “A” (1) Be ready with the text annotated on the day of the performance whether you are selected or not, (2) Contribute to your group’s performance with new insights or polite disagreements rather than simply repeating or affirming what someone else in the group has said, (3) Contribute with new insights as an observer when we debrief after the performance is over, (4) Listen attentively as an observer with an erect carriage rather than checking out / sleeping / working on items from another class / reading / etc., (5) Prove that you understand how to analyze a writer’s style, (6) Seek help outside of class if you’re confused.

Expect a reduced grade if these conditions are not met faithfully. Rushing to annotate before the tardy bell or during the warm-up will be penalized severely. Copying someone else’s annotations will result in an automatic grade level deduction per offense for both parties.

Schedule of texts:

11/2: “The Working Man” (used to write a timed essay Friday 10/30)

11/3, 11/4, 11/5: Nixon, Darrow, FDR (Speeches packet #2; not necessarily in the order listed)

11/9, 11/10, 11/16: Baruch (Speeches packet #2), Pink Flamingo essay (Handed out in class the week of 11/2) (not necessarily in the order listed)

If absent for any of the sessions they can be made up Tuesday(s) after school. Absences will hurt your grade. It will be counted as both a Curriculum Test AND an AP Test.
