- New WordSmart vocabulary, E-L, which will be tested starting in February (not ready yet; stay tuned). A-D WordSmart vocabulary we will begin testing soon using mini quizzes. Your Vocabulary ISN should include thinking maps for all the WordSmart terms A-D you don’t yet know from memory. That includes parts of speech! The new vocabulary list (E-L) is part of the link under English / Lanugage Arts Resources on the right-hand bar, the link that reads “AP English 3 Vocabulary.”
AP US History
DECEMBER/JANUARY CALENDAR (posted since 11/29):
- On-time and participation points: Always unannounced, but there will be 3 per week, most weeks.
- Tuesday, November 30: Exam (Thinking Map format, about the shift in the Democratic and Republican parties, 1945-2010) – Scoring: 10 points for advanced, 8 for proficient, 5 for basic. Deductions: 3 points if taking the test after 12/14 due to absence. If failing, it must be fixed by 12/14.
- Wednesday, December 1: Writer’s Workshop – FRQ Essay #7 – Trace the shift in the Republican and Democratic parties between FDR and Obama.
- Tuesday, December 7: Deadline for make-up of in-class Essay #7 – FRQ (12/1) and in-class Essay #6 – DBQ (due 11/29) (6 point deduction each after today).
- Wednesday, December 8: Minimum Day / No Writer’s Workshop
- Wednesday, December 15: Writer’s Workshop – Essay #9 – FRQ in class; also, Essay #8 – DBQ due.
- Monday, January 3: Silent work day. You may use this time to take your nonfiction book test so you don’t have to schedule an appointment Monday or Tuesday after school in order to receive credit by the end of the school day 1/4. Remember, Tuesday we’re taking the AP exam 1900-1968, so no time during class for the nonfiction book test on Tuesday.
- Tuesday, January 4: 1968-1900 exam. A good performance on this exam would help you a great deal if you needed to argue for a higher semester grade in January. Scoring: 10 points for advanced, 8 for proficient, 5 for basic. Deductions: 3 points if taking the test after 12/14 due to absence. If failing, it must be fixed by 1/11. Also, this is the last day to make up a failing grade on the exam taken 11/30.
- Tuesday, January 4: Nonfiction reading test. You will be able to test during class Monday 1/3 (quiet reading day). Remember, total ratings must equal 6 for the semester by this day in order to avoid deductions. Deductions: 6 points if earning the required ratings late, but completed by 1/11; 12 points if completed by 1/18. Bring your book just in case you’re allowed to use it.
- Tuesday, January 4: Deadline for essay revision. Deductions: 6 points if submitted late, but before 1/11 (absent or not); 12 points if submitted late, but on or before 1/18; 6 points for each major revision error (R = cosmetic revision / not following instructions; M = major foul(s); E = examples not specific; H = prompt not followed or thesis missing); 3 points for any other revision error; total deductions cannot exceed 30.
- Tuesday, January 4: Last day to turn in DBQ Essay #8 without deductions.
- Wednesday, January 5: Writer’s Workshop – Essay Scoring
- Tuesday, January 11: Last day to take or fix the 1968-1900 exam without losing all the points.
- Wednesday, January 12: Writer’s Workshop – Essay #10 FRQ – In class. Make up by Tuesday 1/18 to avoid deduction(s).
- Friday, January 14: Last day for Point Recovery. Any work attempted for Point Recovery after this date counts for second semester.
- Tuesday, January 18: Semester deadline. Any required items completed after this date counts for second semester.
- Wednesday, January 19: Writer’s Workshop TBA
- Final exam (January 20 / 21): We will use this time for the first exam of second semester: review olympics and the assigning of DBQ Essay #11.

SPECIAL POINT RECOVERY: I need artistic wall banners (8 square feet or so) for each of our time periods in U.S. history. I envision lots of images, like a collage, from the time period(s) in question, along with lots of words… famous people, events, places, laws, etc. If you’re interested, come see me and tell me what you plan to do.

MINI-QUIZ STUDY TOPICS: SCOTUS decisions Obama-FDR, Amendments to the Constitution, big events and ideas during each presidency (containment = Truman, Hurrican Katrina = W Bush, for example), decades (1960s are the first decade a vast majority of Americans owned a TV, for example)
LIES MY TEACHER TOLD ME BY LOEWEN: this is the required nonfiction book for second quarter. Finish your current nonfiction book, then move on to the Loewen book. If you’re reading the Zinn book or another book worth 6 points, you may wait until third quarter to begin the Loewen book. You may purchase or order the book at Latino Books y mas in downtown Palm Springs next to Coffee Ignition, near CPK. If you do not have record of this book before the March deadline, expect a deduction.
